Hola! This weekend was filled with some intense adventure full of ocean fun and a fiesta at the school. The fair included games such as hillbilly horse shoes, bean bag toss, face painting, jewelry making and more. The kids gathered from all over San Lorenzo by word of mouth and crowded into the school grounds. They were so excited to play the games that they weren't even focused on what they could win. Once candy ran out, they were surprisingly more excited to receive stickers because they had English words on them. At the end of the fair, people from a church came in and told the story of Jesus through a flannel-graph presentation. It was cool to see God work because although they were speaking in Spanish, the flannel-graph of Jesus' story was universal.
After the fair was over, as a few of us were walking back to La Cueva, we started Red Rover with some of the girls. They were laughing and having a lot of fun. Then we all piled in pickup trucks, ate some delicious lunch at the orphanage, and drove the kids to the beach. We arrived at beach and some kids immediately jumped out and climbed up the sand mountains. One of the kids demonstrated a lot of patience as they held their hand out to help Melissa climb up after falling down countless times. He was about half her size and actually pulled her entire weight up. It really shows how much these kids are serving us even though we're here to serve them. The beach day continued with various activities: volleyball, football, and unexpected swimming with the children. Some of us didn't plan on getting in the water, but after the kids pulled us in to jump on the waves with them, it was pretty hard to resist. Note to self: there is always more sand in your clothes than you think.
This morning, we woke up early to attend Pacoche church with the kids. The church service was full of excitement as we worshiped to the beat of the tambourine. Then we took the kids to Sunday school to hear a story and do a craft while the adults stayed in the church. Although the entire message was in Spanish, we were able to follow along through Paul interpreting and read the scripture references.
After church, we proceeded down to the local pool with the kids to eat and swim. The bus ride there was awesome as we sang worship songs in Spanish. The kids were dancing and laughing. I'm sure they were making fun of our pathetic attempts at singing in their language. We arrived at the pool and the children jumped in right away. They sure love water! They had never-ending amounts of energy as they slid down the slide and did flips. We tried to get a few of them to dance at the end but they were a bit shy, and called our dancing methods "loco". The bus ride back felt like the kids had more energy than they started with and after we dropped them off the bus was oddly silent.
At the moment, we're bagging rice for the people at the Manta dump that we will be visiting tomorrow.
On behalf of the team,
Tim and Melissa
Ps. Hi Mom and Dad and Matthew and Michael and Nina! Hope you guys are doing well, miss you!
Tonia and the Ecuadorian Team, The children in Ecuador sound no different than the children in the states when it comes to enjoying games, face painting, singing, water and just sharing your time with them. What a blessing each one of you are for doing the Lords work. We continue to pray each day for you and especially for tomorrow, that your presence and ministry to the people at Manta's dump will be a blessing to all involved.
ReplyDeleteP.S. Just a side note Tonia, is there any way to get Lenaa's phone number? We keep having Tornado Warnings and today they were in your area. Hopefully no damage.
Love Mom and Dad
Dear Teresa,
ReplyDeleteComo Estas? I hope that all is well, I am sorry that I haven't left you a wonderful message from Michigan yet, but I am here now!
I was going to give a message to my boy Billy but I forgot that he is not accompanying you this year. I hope to see him return in good health as well!
Well if I must remind you from last year, DO NOT go too deep into the ocean because the whales will come to get you if you arent prepared.
Stephanie and I would like to remind you that we miss you very much and we ate at La Senorita today just to dedicate our meal to you. Nosotros amoramos a ti mucho!
No se olvide de cepillarse los dientes! =]

Mami - your 40+ plants have been watered. If they are dead when you return, blame Celia, not me.
ReplyDeleteJenn - have you provided that fraction lesson that you suggested in your first post? I would like to see a video of that one...
Ecuador team - you are all doing amazing things! Your posts sound like you are making memories for yourselves, and pouring into people who need it most. Keep up the awesome work, and continue to seek God each day.
Jessie
Hi Melissa, Tim, and everyone on the mission team!
ReplyDeleteThanks to all for the detailed updates. It’s been great reading about the wonderful things you are doing with the children and of your experiences in Ecuador. The Lord has blessed both the children and the team with memories that will last a lifetime.
May the Lord continue to bless and work mightily through the team for His glory. We are praying for your safe return.
We miss you, Melissa! God bless all of you!
Love, Mom & Dad
Hi Jennifer and team mate, It sounds like your having too much fun with the children. I can wait to see pictures and see how big they have grown. We celebrated Mary's birthday, but couldn't go swimming because of the weather. Travis brought his swim trunks just incase things cleared up. Aunt Cindy brought whoopee cushions for the boys and they loved them. Mike is a bit under the weather with a bad cold. Rich's back is doing better with rest. Dad is counting down the days to get back home. Lizzie and Victoria are staying out of trouble so far. Having a good visit. I had to step in and handle desserts for Mary's birthday....lots of chocolate at her request. The baby is happy. Sounds like she is leaning towards Connor as the baby's name. Nyla & Tycoon will be staying at my house for the 4th. Stephanie is dog sitting. Mary is happy. We miss you and pray for your safe return. Keep up the good work. Love You God Bless you and the team and all that you do. Mom & Dad
ReplyDeleteSteve and Sandy Im so excited for you and all the new experiences you must be having. When i went to Guatemala it was beautiful to go to church with the people and even though I couldn't understand the singing you could still feel the presence of God and the beauty of the people. I'm sure by now you are thanking God everyday for simple things in life like water, hot water, and no fire ants in Michigan. Can't wait to you get home. Love Jean
ReplyDeleteWow it sounds like everyone is having so much fun! Its very cool how the group is playing games, while teaching the kids about god as well. It seems like the kids are so appreciative to have new people to enjoy the day with :) Were praying for all of you....enjoy your last week in equador and be safe!
ReplyDeleteVicky A & Austin I - Go V Go!
Hi Sam from the home front. Sounds like you are having a fabulous time while helping out so many people. Who's having more fun, you or the kids?
ReplyDeleteTorch is beautiful and pretty warm, I think we'll actually get in the water this year. Your boys are doing well, I did have to remind Leroy not to use his outdoor voice while inside, he took the message well (so if you guys haven't figured it out, Leroy is a dog.) It's going to be a little cool for the next couple days but warm weather is coming back just in time for your arrival.
Keep up the good work and stay safe. Love you, Mom
Plants are alive and well! But, the fish.....
ReplyDeletePumpkin seems very sad lately. She still meets me at the door, but hasn't come downstairs for our feeding, scooping, and brushing ritual. She actually looks sad. I sent a note to J to tell him to hurry home cause she misses him so much. Cinco on the other hand, is a total lover bug.
Getting excited about our vacation! I even bought a new pair of shorts! I will wear them with my new Muggle shirt.
Still miss you, still love you, and still praying for all of you. XOXOX
Hey Bobby.... My llamo Matthew Johnson!!
